What is Arbutin?

Arbutin is an antioxidant, which is a pretty well-known and widely used skin lightening agent with the magic ability to fade brown spots. It is a derivative of hydroquinone and is a widely used skin lightening agent. That may be derived from plants (most commonly the bearberry, cranberry, blueberry, and pear) or synthesized in a laboratory. The plant-derived form is called beta arbutin, and the synthetic forms are alpha arbutin and deoxyarbutin.

Studies have shown that the synthetic derivatives alpha arbutin and deoxyarbutin are more effective in this regard than the pure natural forms of beta arbutin because they have better stability, longer efficacy and are more effective in human skin There is no risk of sensitivity when exposed to UV light.

The difference between alpha arbutin and beta arbutin.
Alpha Arbutin -- This is the purest and most potent form of arbutin (especially compared to beta arbutin). It is a powerful skin lightening agent suitable for all skin types. Alpha arbutin is expensive to manufacture, which is why usually only high-quality products contain this ingredient. Also, Alpha arbutin is more stable than Beta arbutin.
Beta Arbutin -- This form of arbutin is commonly referred to as "arbutin", this formulation is less expensive to produce and manufacture and is not as effective as alpha arbutin. So most skin products now contain alpha arbutin, and only a few skin care products contain beta arbutin.”

How does Arbutin works?
As we all know, our skin tone depends on the amount of melanin in our skin. The more melanin we have, the darker our skin tone will be.
Melanin is produced by melanocytes. These cells contain an enzyme called tyrosinase, which is what causes our skin to darken. When our skin is exposed to UV light, tyrosinase is activated and our skin darkens.
While proper melanin production protects our skin cells from the sun's harmful rays, overexposure in certain areas, such as the face, can lead to unevenness and dark spots. This is the cause of hyperpigmentation.
The effect of arbutin is to reduce the production of melanin by inhibiting the activity of tyrosinase. When there is less melanin in our body, our complexion becomes clearer, lighter and more even.
